As the person who wrote these songs, writing on an acoustic guitar in various cities in various bedrooms as an effort to feel okay about this whole “being alive” and “knowing other people” situation, I fully admit they’re sort of embarrassing. Just the songs, not the band. Tom and Jim and Corey are wonderful. I had sort of assumed I was never going to be in a band again, because finding people to play with felt like too much work. Especially with the kind of stuff I was writing, which felt more like self-help music. But then Tom happened to move to St. Louis around the same time I wound up here from Madeline Island, and we started playing. It was honestly just an excuse to hang out with Tom on my part. But “jamming” didn’t seem to be finding a direction, so I started playing one of the many diary-entry songs I’d written over the years and it felt like it was clicking. Then I was fortunate enough to meet Jim at an estate sale–long story–and he joined up. We would practice regularly during the lockdown. Then we had a set and went to record with my brother in Louisville. Then my brother mastered and mixed it and Jim made album art. I’ve been hemming and hawing about sharing this for so long that I’m surprised someone hasn’t bludgeoned me with a hammer, but a friend recently told me to just think of it as a document and fucking get over myself. I still find the songs terrifying because I wrote them and I’m singing about my feelings, but, just so I can sleep tonight: 1) I intentionally “borrow” an Uncle Tupelo line in one song–it felt right and sort of expressed what I was having trouble saying; 2) some songs are a mishmash of thoughts and events and relationships that are a bit queasy to me now, but the writing was sincere. And probably so oblique that no one would possibly know what the fuck I’m talking about. I’m proud of the work Tom, Corey and Jim and everyone else put into it. It’s a document, that’s all. And I’ve got many more sad songs I’ll be embarrassed to play but might play if we’re ever sitting close together. But you have to play a song first.
